In front of the store, the smells of wood, ale and tobacco smoke reaches your senses. There are four rickety, unpadded vacant chairs on the porch that is usually occupied with folks who would gossip, else relax, watching strangers and neighbors come and go. The porch and its stairs are sturdy, but weathered, and the railing is wobbly. A flimsy piece of carpet runs from the porch to inside the general store. It’s quiet; nobody is seen or heard.
